Our Founder
...
Dr. Davidian is a distinguished ophthalmologist and philanthropist whose career has spanned more than five decades, beginning with his graduation from Loma Linda University Medical School in 1970.
After completing his medical education, Dr. Davidian dedicated two years as a missionary physician and surgeon in Guyana, followed by five years as a general physician in Northern California. He then pursued ophthalmology training at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles.
In his role as Chief of Ophthalmology at Riverside General Hospital, Dr. Davidian was invited to teach at Montemorelos University in Mexico. During a two-week visit in 1981, he saw an opportunity to create a training program that would develop the immense potential of the medical students and shape the next generation of ophthalmologists. His vision led to the development of a training program that has since graduated over 350 highly skilled ophthalmologists now serving communities across South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa.
James Davidian
AIES Founder
Dr. Davidian continued to teach at Loma Linda University for 21 years before transitioning to private practice in California and Oregon. He founded Adventist International Eye Services (AIES), which initially ran the successful training program in Mexico. As that program became self-sustaining, AIES expanded its efforts to Madagascar, where it established a clinic in the capital city of Antananarivo, in 2004. Today, the Madagascar program is a thriving, dynamic initiative, with eight doctors and three residents in comprehensive ophthalmology, providing essential eye care to over 2,000 patients each month.
In 2020, Dr. Davidian again resumed his presidency of AIES and under his leadership and supervision, the Madagascar clinic has become a vital resource for under-served Malagasy populations. The program’s impact continues to grow, and its success serves as a testament to Dr. Davidian’s lifelong dedication to improving access to healthcare and education worldwide.
