The Adventist International Eye Services organization was started in the early ’80’s, to establish training of Eye Doctors outside the US. It took over 12 years to establish the Residency Training Program, but meanwhile a large amount of Eye Care services were provided to the people of Northern Mexico. The central clinic, housing for visiting doctors, and a surgical suite suitable for eye surgery were all established in Montemorelos, a town 50 miles south 0f Monterrey in northeast Mexico. This is the location of Montemorelos University (MMU), an Adventist education system, training students from first grade through university. There is also an accredited Medical School. The students are bright and capable, and are highly motivated. We now train doctors as Residents in Comprehensive Ophthalmology with general surgical skills, as well as subspecialty training in Retina and Glaucoma surgery.
